World Physical Therapy Day

The 8th September, World Physical Therapy Day, presents a great opportunity to promote physical therapy and its contribution to health at a community and global level.

Building within our theme of 'Movement for Health', this year WCPT will be producing additional material on the contribution of physical therapy in combating lifestyle diseases, covering:

    * heart disease
    * diabetes
    * stroke
    * HIV
    * childhood obesity

These will be added to the toolkit produced last year, offering support in organising events and campaigns to celebrate the day. This additional material will be posted to the WCPT website next month ready for you do download, adapt and incorporate into your activities.

For further information please go to www.wcpt.org/wptday

WCPT Awards

The WCPT Awards Committee for 2011 has now been appointed, with a representative from each of WCPT's five regions. The awards programme will be launched later this year, when we will be seeking nominations for physical therapists and leaders within rehabilitation who have made an outstanding contribution to the profession at an international level.

Look out for the next issue of WCPT News featuring details of the committee's members and award categories.

WHO: Childhood Injury

This month's WHO Bulletin is a special theme issue dedicated to childhood injuries and violence, a significant cause of child death and disability. Every year injuries and violence kill approximately 950,000 children and injure or disable millions more. This is a tragedy as much of it is avoidable. Known and effective prevention and treatment strategies remain greatly underutilised, especially in developing countries where 95% of child injury deaths occur. This issue of the Bulletin seeks to promote greater attention to this significant public health problem and to explore ways in which this burden can be lowered.
Please go to www.who.int/bulletin/en/ <http://www.who.int/bulletin/en/>.
As part of the Bulletin an article on /Rehabilitation of the injured child / <http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/87/5/09-057067/en/index.html>has
also been published.

A draft version of a new WCPT Position Statement, /The Consequences of Armed Conflict, Landmines and other Weapons of War/, will be sent to all WCPT member organisations, regions and subgroups next week for comment.

Once all comments have been received and reviewed a final draft will be prepared and made available via the WCPT website, prior to its consideration at the WCPT General Meeting in 2011 .
